- He and his brother John enlisted same time, in the 2nd Regiment of Kentucky Militia Pulaski county Kentucky 9 Aug 1812, went to Georgetown near Lexington Kentucky where he was assigned 1 Sept 1812 to Capt Tunstall Quarles CO. in colonel William Jennings 2nod Regt. Of The Kentucky Militia. A few weeks later this unit was in Ohio.. Constructing and patrolling the route along the Auglaize River between Ft. Jennings and Ft. Defiance. Wrote James gggrandson Jesse Thompson. The armys main struggle was with the terrain, which had become quagmire because of unusually heavy rainfalls.
- James Boyd was discharged from the army at Cincinnati, Ohio on March 9th 1813
- In his Nov 15, 1850 application for bounty land, James Boyd stated he volunteered at Somerset for a six-month term, but at the request of General William H. Harrison, he consented to remain until reinforcements were obtained.
- For his service (under the Act of 28 Sept. 1850), James received 80 acres that he "legally disposof". James Boyds pension application of 21 March 1871 stated he was under Paul Harrisons commandand in several military skirmishes with Indians. After receiving a $8.00 monthly pension commencing 14 February 1871.
